The political and entertainment spheres were thrown into fresh controversy on Sunday after Senator Ned Nwoko publicly accused his wife, popular Nollywood actress Regina Daniels, of drug and alcohol abuse — a claim he says lies at the root of their marital crisis.
In a lengthy statement released on his official Facebook page, the Delta North senator expressed concern for Regina’s “health and safety,” alleging that her substance abuse struggles have led to violent outbursts and erratic behaviour at home.
The statement, titled “Regina’s Unprovoked Carnage and Rampage in My House and in My Absence,” painted a troubling picture of the actress’s alleged recent conduct. According to Nwoko, Regina “was not always like this” but now needs to continue a rehabilitation programme “or risk serious harm to her life.”
The lawmaker said he had advised his wife to seek professional help at a rehabilitation centre either in Asokoro, Abuja, or abroad, particularly in Jordan, where he claimed she would be unable to access drugs. However, he alleged that Regina refused and instead relocated to an undisclosed location where she could “easily obtain substances.”
Nwoko further alleged that Regina had become physically aggressive, claiming she slapped and hit three domestic staff members within 48 hours and destroyed property, including cars and windows.
“Regina’s current battle with drugs and alcohol abuse is the root of our problem. She must continue her rehabilitation program, or I fear for her life and safety. Now she has moved to a place where she will have unrestricted access to drugs,” the senator said.
He maintained that he has “never been violent” toward any of his wives, asserting instead that Regina had displayed violent tendencies. Nwoko also accused two individuals identified as Sammy and Ann of supplying drugs to the actress, alleging that a confrontation with a nurse who reportedly exposed her drug use triggered recent chaos at their home.
“A clear-headed Regina would have taken Moon (our son) to the hospital, but instead she threatened to kill our resident nurse for exposing her drug abuse. While I took Moon to the hospital, a scene of chaos unfolded at home, orchestrated by Sammy, Regina’s main drug supplier,” he claimed.
Regina Daniels, 25, rose to fame as a child actress and became one of Nollywood’s most recognisable stars. She married Senator Nwoko, a lawyer and politician, in 2019, and the couple share two children.
The senator’s public statement followed a viral video that surfaced on Saturday, showing Regina in tears as she cried out over alleged domestic violence in her marriage.
In the clip, which circulated widely on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the actress appeared distressed and was heard saying:
“Not again, I can’t stand the violence; it’s too much. In Ned Nwoko’s house, I am nothing, but in my own house, I am a queen.”
The footage also showed onlookers attempting to calm her down amid what appeared to be a heated altercation. The cause of the disturbance was unclear.
Nigerians React to Ned Nwoko’s Claims
Senator Nwoko’s statement has stirred widespread reactions online, with social media users divided over his decision to publicly accuse Regina of substance abuse.
While some expressed support for the senator, others criticised him for making such personal matters public.
Below are a few reactions from users on X:
@okaforu22: “My sister-in-law who’s an actress in Asaba used to tell us how Regina would sneak into the bush to allegedly do drugs during movie sets long before she married Ned. This revelation doesn’t surprise me.”
@L_victor014: “Ned Nwoko is trying to blackmail Regina Daniels and her brother Sammy for taking drugs. If Regina didn’t have power over him, he wouldn’t have gone this far. But if he says she’s into drugs, I won’t doubt it either.”
@HiikyaaTor: “For a man who claims to love his wife, coming online to accuse her of drug and alcohol abuse is a new low. Are you seeking sympathy from the public instead of fixing your home?”
@TaraBlinkz: “If he knew about her alleged drug use all along, why wait until things exploded? Addressing it only after a fight shows failure on both sides.”
As the controversy continues to unfold, both the Nigerian public and entertainment industry watchers await Regina Daniels’ official response to her husband’s serious allegations.
