The Nigerian naira appreciated by ₦8.21 against the United States dollar during the first week of September 2026, according to data from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
The currency closed trading on Friday, September 4, at ₦1,321.22 per dollar, compared with ₦1,329.43 per dollar recorded at the end of the previous trading week.
The latest movement represents a modest gain for the naira despite fluctuations recorded in the foreign exchange market during the week.
CBN data showed that the naira recorded mixed movements during the week, with the currency strengthening on some trading days before giving up some of the gains towards the end of the week.
On Thursday, September 3, the naira stood at ₦1,315.67 per dollar before weakening to ₦1,321.22 per dollar on Friday.
Despite the Friday depreciation, the naira still ended the week stronger than its position at the close of the previous week.
The development comes amid continued efforts by the Central Bank of Nigeria to improve stability and liquidity in the foreign exchange market.
Market watchers continue to monitor movements in the official and parallel foreign exchange markets as businesses, investors and consumers assess the impact of currency fluctuations on the economy.
The latest appreciation adds to recent periods of relative stability in the naira-dollar exchange rate, although the currency remains vulnerable to changes in foreign exchange demand and supply.
