Football legends Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo could make history later this year by playing on the same team for the first time.
The possibility has emerged as former Manchester United and Argentina forward Carlos Tevez prepares for a star-studded farewell match scheduled for December at Boca Juniors’ iconic La Bombonera Stadium.
Tevez, who played alongside Ronaldo at Manchester United and represented Argentina with Messi, is hoping to reunite both superstars for the testimonial match.
“Leo Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo will be there,” Tevez reportedly said, adding that he would personally go and get them if necessary.
He also revealed that he remains in contact with both players, saying he has their phone numbers on WhatsApp.
Messi and Ronaldo have spent much of their careers as fierce rivals, particularly during their years at Barcelona and Real Madrid. Although they have faced each other numerous times, they have never played as teammates in either a competitive or exhibition match.
The planned testimonial could therefore provide a rare opportunity for the two icons to share the same dressing room and pitch.
Other major names expected to feature at the event include former Manchester United stars Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand, as well as Italian legends Andrea Pirlo and Gianluigi Buffon.
However, despite Tevez’s confidence, reports indicate that Messi and Ronaldo have not officially confirmed their participation, meaning their appearance remains subject to confirmation.
Tevez retired from professional football in 2021 after a celebrated career that included spells with Boca Juniors, Manchester United, Manchester City and Juventus.
He played alongside Ronaldo at Manchester United between 2007 and 2009, with the pair winning two Premier League titles, the Champions League, League Cup and Club World Cup.
He also shared the Argentina national team with Messi between 2005 and 2015.
If Tevez succeeds in bringing the two football icons together, the December farewell could produce one of the most anticipated football reunions in recent years.
