A tragic incident has claimed the life of a young actor during a rehearsal for a Passion of Christ drama in Cross River State.

The victim, identified as Michael Nnanke Obeten, was reportedly participating in preparations for the Good Friday performance in Ugep, Yakurr Local Government Area, when a cannon used for stage effects malfunctioned.

Obeten, a Mass Communication graduate and former lead actor who had previously portrayed Jesus Christ in earlier editions of the play, was said to be assisting with the rehearsal at the time of the incident.

The accident occurred during a scene depicting the crucifixion, where a locally made cannon intended to simulate thunder reportedly discharged unexpectedly. Debris from the device struck him in the head, leaving him critically injured.

He was immediately rushed for medical treatment and scheduled for emergency surgery but later succumbed to his injuries.

Reports indicate that the device involved in the incident may have been handled by individuals not certified to operate such equipment, raising concerns about safety practices during public performances.

The incident has sparked outrage among colleagues and associates, who described the death as avoidable and are calling for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

They have also urged authorities to enforce stricter regulations on the use of explosive devices at public and religious events to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
