Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has stirred reactions on social media following a moment many Nigerians described as awkward after he appeared to brush off his wife’s public display of affection at a recent official event.

Governor Makinde and his wife attended the dinner and award night organised as part of activities marking Oyo State’s 50th anniversary, held on Wednesday, February 4.

During the ceremony, the event host invited the governor’s wife to kiss her husband on the cheek in the presence of guests. As she leaned forward to do so, the governor was seen turning his face away, an action that quickly drew attention online after a video of the moment surfaced.

The incident sparked mixed reactions among social media users, with some criticising the governor for what they described as an embarrassing snub, while others suggested he may have been distracted and unaware of what was happening.

Reacting, a user identified as Ritadiamonds wrote, “She felt very bad and embarrassed. I feel her pain. I don’t think everything is okay at home.”

Another user, coupletherapies, offered a different view, saying, “His mind was not there. He was busy with his phone. He didn’t know what was going on. This kind of embarrassment when all eyes was on them.”

Thegreat commented, “At least he should have given her a peck or something. I like the fact that she also gave him a cold shoulder afterwards.”

Similarly, Hyfendy noted, “I don’t know why some men would not show public display of love and affection to their wives outside. This is sad honestly.”

Other reactions were more dramatic. African_prints wrote, “Haa fire for fire… they will quarrel heavy quarrel at home oooo. 😢 Feel bad for her.”

Fumsy added, “This embarrassment is too much haaa 🥺 not funny at all. I trust my gender to pepper him for house.”

Some commenters focused on the governor’s wife, with Martha_7 saying, “She looking up was her trying to withhold tears from dropping down!” while Tee_fabrics added, “She held up her tear. It’s well.”

Another user, Nairadairy, compared the situation to other political figures, remarking, “This is where Wike will deliver—he will do it and do it for the camera.”

As of the time of filing this report, Governor Makinde has not reacted publicly to the incident.
