Oyo State Governor and presidential candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Seyi Makinde, has questioned President Bola Tinubu’s bid for a second term, citing a promise the President made about electricity during the 2023 campaign.
Makinde spoke on Monday at the Boye Nation/JAF Movement Mega Concert in Ibadan while defending the use of diesel-powered generators to operate some streetlights in Oyo State.
He said the continued reliance on generators was a consequence of the country’s electricity challenges.
According to Makinde, Tinubu had told Nigerians during the 2023 campaign that they should not vote for him for a second term if he failed to fix electricity.
“If he had fixed the electricity problem, we wouldn’t be buying diesel for our generators or power streetlights,” Makinde said.
However, the interpretation of Tinubu’s 2023 statement has been disputed by the Presidency. Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, previously said critics had omitted a qualification in Tinubu’s remarks concerning whether there were adequate reasons for failing to deliver on the promise.
Makinde’s comments come as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with electricity supply remaining one of the issues being raised in the debate over the Tinubu administration’s record.
