London-Based Goalkeeper Selected to Become King of Ugandan Kingdom

A London-based non-league football goalkeeper, George Desmond Kamurasi, has been selected to become the next king of the Tooro Kingdom in western Uganda, following the death of his cousin, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.

Kamurasi, 36, is the captain and goalkeeper of SE Dons, a football club based in southeast London that competes in the ninth tier of the English football pyramid. His selection was made by the Tooro royal succession committee, with 15 of the 18 members who participated in the meeting voting in his favour.

He is a member of the Babiito royal family and a grandson of former Tooro monarch King George Rukidi III. Kamurasi is also a first cousin of the late King Oyo, who died at the age of 34 after battling cancer. Oyo had ruled the kingdom since becoming king at just three years old in 1995.

The selection has created an unusual situation for Kamurasi, who has built his life in Britain and continues to play football in London. Reports indicate that he is reluctant to abandon his football career and return to Uganda to assume the traditional responsibilities of the Tooro throne. He has not publicly commented on the selection.

Under Tooro cultural traditions, however, refusing the throne is reportedly regarded as an abomination, potentially leaving Kamurasi with a difficult choice between his established life in Britain and his family’s royal responsibilities in Uganda.

Kamurasi’s potential accession comes as the Tooro Kingdom mourns the death of King Oyo, who was one of Uganda’s best-known traditional rulers. Although Uganda’s traditional kingdoms were abolished in 1967, they were restored in 1993 as cultural institutions and do not exercise political authority over the country.

The Tooro Kingdom, located in western Uganda, retains significant cultural importance among its people. Its monarch, known as the Omukama, serves primarily as a cultural and traditional leader rather than a political ruler.

Kamurasi is now faced with the prospect of exchanging the football pitch for the royal palace, with his future in London football potentially coming to an end if he accepts the traditional role. His formal proclamation as the next Omukama is expected to follow the kingdom’s succession procedures after the burial of the late King Oyo.
