Jorge Messi, the father and long-time agent of Argentine football superstar Lionel Messi, has died at the age of 68.
Jorge passed away on Friday night, August 7, at a medical clinic in Rosario, Argentina, following a prolonged illness, according to the family.
He had spent his final months receiving medical treatment while alternating between the clinic and his home, where he was accompanied by his wife, Celia, and their children, Rodrigo, Matías and María Sol.
Messi had reportedly spent time with his father following the World Cup before returning to his club, Inter Miami.
Jorge Messi was a major figure throughout his son’s football career, particularly during Messi’s formative years at Barcelona, and later served as his representative.
Lionel Messi has previously spoken about his close relationship with his father, recalling how he would seek Jorge’s opinion after matches.
Club Atlético Newell’s Old Boys confirmed his death in a social media statement, describing Jorge as a key pillar who supported his son’s career with “vision, rigour and affection.”
The Argentine Football Association also expressed condolences to the Messi family, offering its support during the difficult period.
Jorge’s health had attracted public attention after Lionel Messi became emotional following Argentina’s World Cup victory over Algeria. The footballer later explained that his tears were related to a personal matter unrelated to football, amid reports of his father’s deteriorating health.
Jorge Messi played an important role in guiding his son’s career from his early years and remained one of his closest advisers throughout his rise to becoming one of football’s most celebrated players.
