The management of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, has confirmed the killing of one of its students during an unauthorized sign-out ceremony in Ogbomoso, Oyo State.

The victim, identified as Mr. Marvelous Olanrewaju Babalola, was a 300-level Mechanical Engineering student. He was shot on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, during the event at the Ultramodern Wazo Market.

In a statement, Registrar Olayinka Balogun expressed the institution’s deep sadness over the tragedy, noting that LAUTECH had banned sign-out activities on campus since 2023 and had directed hotels in the area not to host such gatherings.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that a group of students still chose to hold a sign-out ceremony on the football pitch within the Wazo Ultramodern Market. The gathering turned fatal when a male student was shot,” the statement read.

Reports indicated that the victim attempted to leave the venue on his motorbike but struggled to operate it before falling and becoming unresponsive. Following a distress call, the Acting Dean of Student Affairs investigated and contacted the Oyo State Police Command.

Police personnel dispatched to the scene found a bag on the victim that helped identify him. His body was later moved to the LAUTECH Teaching Hospital morgue.

The university said it is fully cooperating with the police and has informed the deceased’s family.

“The management extends its heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Mr. Babalola. May God grant him eternal rest and comfort his loved ones during this difficult time,” the statement concluded.
