A 53-year-old woman, Nelly Monday, has been sentenced to one month in prison for dumping refuse into a drainage channel during rainfall in Lagos State.
Monday, a resident of Meiran, Lagos, was arrested on September 9, 2026, by officials of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) after she was allegedly caught disposing of waste in a drainage channel.
She was subsequently arraigned before the Bolade Magistrate Court sitting in Oshodi, where she pleaded guilty to the environmental offence and was sentenced to one month in prison.
LAWMA, in a statement, warned residents against indiscriminate waste disposal, particularly the dumping of refuse in drainage channels and other unauthorised locations.
The authority said such practices constitute environmental offences and can contribute to blocked drainage systems and other environmental problems, particularly during periods of rainfall.
LAWMA urged residents to dispose of their waste responsibly through approved waste disposal channels, stressing that enforcement teams would continue to identify and sanction environmental offenders across the state.
The conviction comes amid renewed enforcement by Lagos authorities against environmental violations. The Lagos State Ministry of Justice said the state’s Special Offences (Mobile) Court is mandated to prosecute environmental offences, including illegal dumping of refuse and blockage of drainage channels.
The latest case also follows previous prosecutions of environmental offenders in Lagos, as authorities intensify efforts to discourage indiscriminate waste disposal and improve environmental sanitation across the state.
