The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed that its ban on flogging students in schools remains in effect, emphasizing counseling as an alternative disciplinary measure.
Jamiu Alli-Balogun, the state Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, made this known on Monday while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
Alli-Balogun reiterated that flogging students, and corporal punishment in public schools remained prohibited.
He said: “There is a policy here in Lagos and other parts of the country prohibiting teachers from giving corporal punishment to students/pupils.
“Against flogging of students, we have adopted counseling as a measure of correction.”
Alli-Balogun further stated that other forms of punishments such as kneeling, picking up dirt, and cutting grass within the school premises could also be applied.
The Lagos State Government banned corporal punishment in 2022.
It implemented the Safeguarding and Child Protection Programme in school that year.
