The Lagos State Government has announced a partial traffic diversion along the Kara Bridge section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway as rehabilitation works on the bridge’s expansion joint commence on Tuesday, July 28, 2026.
In a statement issued by the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, the government said the repair project will be carried out by the Federal Ministry of Works and is expected to last for two weeks.
According to the ministry, the rehabilitation will require the temporary reduction of the existing four-lane carriageway to two lanes along a 1.5-kilometre section of the bridge to provide a safe working area for engineers.
“To facilitate the repair works, the existing four-lane carriageway will be temporarily reduced to two lanes over a 1.5-kilometre stretch to provide a safe work zone,” the ministry stated.
The government warned that the lane reduction could result in moderate traffic congestion around the Fatgbems Turn, as some motorists may make U-turns or seek alternative routes to avoid delays.
However, it assured commuters travelling toward Ibadan beyond the Fatgbems Turn that traffic is expected to flow with little or no disruption throughout the repair period.
Motorists were advised to plan their journeys in advance, consider alternative routes where possible, comply with traffic regulations and cooperate with traffic management personnel deployed along the corridor to ensure the smooth flow of traffic.
The ministry appealed to members of the public for patience and understanding, noting that the rehabilitation is intended to improve the safety, durability and overall condition of the Kara Bridge for all road users.
