The vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 general election, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has expressed confidence that the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, will honour his commitment to serve only one term if elected President.
Kwankwaso made the remarks during an appearance on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme, on Monday.
According to the former Kano State governor, Obi has pledged to serve a single four-year term before handing over power to a candidate from Northern Nigeria in 2031, completing what he described as the eight-year tenure of the South that began under President Bola Tinubu.
“I have no doubt that Peter Obi will keep his promise,” Kwankwaso said.
He also revealed that both leaders had formalised the agreement as part of their political understanding within the Nigeria Democratic Congress.
“We have signed an agreement with the party and with each other,” he stated.
Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, has consistently maintained that he would serve only one term if elected in 2027, a position his supporters say is intended to promote equity and strengthen national unity.
Kwankwaso’s comments come amid growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, as parties continue to unveil their strategies and build alliances.
