King Charles III is set to address a joint meeting of the U.S. Congress and hold a private meeting with Donald Trump during an upcoming state visit to the United States.

According to Buckingham Palace, the visit will take place from April 27 to April 30, with the King and Queen Camilla scheduled to visit Washington, D.C., New York, and Virginia as part of activities marking the 250th anniversary of American independence.

The monarch will become only the second British sovereign to address a joint session of Congress, following Queen Elizabeth II, who delivered a similar address in 1991.

The visit comes amid renewed tensions in the UK–U.S. relationship, with President Trump recently criticising the government of Keir Starmer over its stance on U.S. military operations involving Iran.

Despite concerns raised by some British lawmakers over the timing, the Palace said the visit aims to strengthen long-standing diplomatic, economic, and security ties between both nations. As a constitutional monarch, King Charles is expected to remain neutral and act as a symbolic representative of the United Kingdom.

During the Washington leg of the trip, the royal couple will be received by President Trump and Melania Trump for a private meeting, followed by a formal welcome ceremony and military honours.

Other key events include a state dinner and a memorial ceremony for fallen soldiers, highlighting the enduring military partnership between the two countries.

In New York, the King and Queen will visit the 9/11 Memorial and engage with youth-focused initiatives addressing food insecurity and sustainable urban farming.

The visit will conclude in Virginia, where the King—known for his environmental advocacy—will meet with indigenous communities and conservation groups before departing for a subsequent visit to Bermuda.
