Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has formally registered as a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Adamawa State, marking a significant shift in Nigeria’s opposition landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The registration took place on Monday, days after Atiku informed ADC supporters and stakeholders in Adamawa of his decision. His aide, Abdul Rasheeth, confirmed the development in a statement.

Videos and photos from the event showed Atiku’s convoy welcomed by cheering supporters who beat drums, sang, and held placards bearing his portrait. The former vice president acknowledged the crowd as he collected his ADC membership card.

Shortly after the registration, Atiku posted on X (formerly Twitter), writing: “It’s official. -AA.”

The move formalises Atiku’s long-speculated alignment with the coalition party, which he publicly endorsed in July as a platform capable of uniting opposition figures — including Peter Obi and Babachir Lawal — to challenge President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

Until now, Atiku and other key opposition leaders had held off on officially joining the ADC. His entry is expected to boost the party’s profile and provide fresh momentum for a united opposition front as preparations for the next election intensify.
