Education advocate and CEO of Educare, Alex Onyia, has sparked widespread concern after sharing the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) result of a previously high-performing student, raising fresh questions about the credibility of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
He shared the result of the student on X identified as Michael Inemisit Uduak who scored just 148 this year.
The breakdown revealed scores of 35 in Use of English, 41 in Physics, 35 in Biology, and 37 in Chemistry.
What drew public attention was the stark contrast between this year’s performance and her previous results. Uduak reportedly scored 281 in 2023 and an impressive 311 in 2024, making this year’s outcome appear highly unusual.
Onyia expressed doubt over the accuracy of the score, calling for transparency from the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB). “Last two years she scored 281 in JAMB, last year she scored 311, and this year she is scoring 148. This is impossible,” he wrote. “JAMB needs to let these students see their mark sheet to review their results themselves.”
Many users on social media shared similar concerns, with some questioning how a top scorer could fall so drastically. Others speculated about issues such as system errors or improper result processing.
Online reactions also raised broader concerns about pressure on students to pursue medicine and other competitive courses. Some commenters emphasized the importance of career counseling, noting that consistently high-scoring candidates often rewrite UTME in pursuit of limited course slots.
This latest development highlights ongoing concerns about JAMB result transparency and the emotional impact of tertiary entrance exams on young Nigerians.
