The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has debunked a report alleging that the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) is no longer a requirement for admission into tertiary institutions in Nigeria.

In a statement issued on Thursday by JAMB’s Director of Public Affairs and Protocol, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, the Board described the report—published by Phonix.browser.com on October 16, 2025—as “malicious and preposterous.”

Dr. Benjamin clarified that the Minister of Education, Dr. Mauruf Alausa, never made any pronouncement suggesting that UTME had been scrapped as a prerequisite for admission.

“Our attention has been drawn to the fallacious information stating that JAMB is no longer a prerequisite for admission into tertiary institutions in Nigeria,” the statement read.

“We wish to categorically state that the information is malicious and preposterous, as Hon. Minister of Education, Dr. Mauruf Alausa, has at no point made such a pronouncement.”

The Board explained that the misrepresented statement—“Renewed Hope in Action: Federal Government Streamlines Admission Requirements to Expand Access to Tertiary Education”—was actually part of the government’s broader effort to expand access to higher education, not to abolish the UTME.

JAMB therefore urged the public to disregard the false report and assured Nigerians that it will continue to perform its statutory duties in accordance with its enabling laws.

“We therefore call on the general public to disregard the unfounded information and take note that JAMB shall continue to discharge its statutory duties in line with its enabling laws,” the statement added.
