Iran has recorded the world’s largest volume of newly discovered natural gas since 2025, with discoveries at the Takht and Pazan gas fields reaching a combined 17.5 trillion cubic feet (tcf).
The development was reported by TV BRICS, a partner of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), citing Iranian officials. The discoveries place Iran ahead of other countries in terms of newly identified gas volumes during the period.
The Takht gas field, located in Fars Province in southern Iran, accounts for 7.5 trillion cubic feet of gas in place. Of that volume, about 5.5 trillion cubic feet is estimated to be recoverable.
The remaining volume of the combined 17.5 trillion cubic feet comes from the Pazan gas field, which is also part of Iran’s recent exploration activities.
Iranian authorities said the discoveries have encouraged plans to expand exploration for additional hydrocarbon resources across the country.
Officials said exploration efforts will focus partly on Iran’s north-eastern, northern and north-western regions, where authorities believe further oil and gas resources could be identified.
The latest discoveries add to Iran’s already substantial natural gas resources. The country is one of the world’s largest holders of proven natural gas reserves, although sanctions, financing constraints, technology limitations and high domestic consumption have complicated the development of some of its resources.
The reported 17.5 trillion cubic feet should also not be interpreted as gas that can immediately be produced. Gas “in place” refers to the total amount contained in a reservoir, while the recoverable portion depends on geology, technology, infrastructure and the economics of developing the fields.
Iran’s latest discoveries could therefore strengthen its long-term energy potential, but turning the resources into commercial production will require further exploration, investment and development of the necessary infrastructure.
