The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has disclosed that more than 505,906 Nigerians completed their online pre-registration for the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) within just five days of its resumption.
INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, made this known in Abuja on Friday, August 22, 2025, at the official flag-off of nationwide sensitisation activities for the CVR. He was represented at the event by National Commissioner, Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu.
Yakubu described the massive response as proof that Nigerians are eager to participate in the democratic process.
“As at midnight of Thursday, 22nd of August, 2025, over 505,906 citizens have pre-registered since the portal opened five days ago. For us, this is a testament that Nigerians believe in our democracy and the efforts of the Commission to further strengthen the electoral process,” he stated.
He explained that the exercise, which began with online pre-registration on Monday, August 18, 2025, will enter its physical phase from Monday, August 25, 2025. At that stage, citizens who pre-registered online, as well as those registering afresh, will complete the process at INEC offices across the country, where their biometrics will be captured.
As part of efforts to mobilise citizens, INEC launched a sensitisation campaign featuring a colourful roadshow organised by the Voter Education and Publicity Department. The train moved from the INEC Headquarters in Maitama through Banex Plaza in Wuse and down to Wuse Market, distributing flyers and engaging residents. Similar activities will take place in states nationwide.
Yakubu urged all eligible citizens—especially young Nigerians, first-time voters, and those needing to update or transfer their records—to seize the opportunity.
“Your Permanent Voter Card (PVC) is key to making your voice heard,” he said, while calling on political parties, civil society organisations, the media, and stakeholders to partner with INEC in raising awareness.
The CVR exercise will run in 811 centres nationwide, including all 774 local government offices and state offices, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Mondays to Fridays.
Through the dedicated portal, www.cvr.inecnigeria.org, citizens can pre-register, confirm their PVC status, locate registration centres, transfer registration, request replacement of lost or damaged PVCs, and correct personal information.
INEC assured that special provisions have been made to ensure accessibility for persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups.
Yakubu concluded by emphasising that voter registration is a shared responsibility:
“We appeal for collective support from all Nigerians because democracy can only thrive when every eligible citizen participates.”
