The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that preparations for the 2027 election timetable and related activities are complete.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, disclosed this on Wednesday in Abuja during a meeting with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs). He confirmed that the commission has submitted its inputs to the National Assembly regarding the ongoing Electoral Act amendment, noting that the final outcome of the legislative process could affect some of INEC’s planned schedules for the 2027 polls.
Despite the pending amendments, Amupitan reassured that INEC is ready to conduct the elections based on the provisions of the existing Electoral Act.
Last week, the Senate’s deliberations on the Electoral Act 2022 (Repeal and Re-enactment) Bill, 2026, ended inconclusively after more than four hours of closed-door discussions on the report of a seven-member ad hoc committee. The committee was tasked with collating and harmonising lawmakers’ submissions on the bill.
After the closed-door session, Senate President Godswill Akpabio declined to reveal the outcome of the deliberations and adjourned plenary to the next legislative day, leaving the status of the bill unresolved.
INEC’s announcement signals the commission’s commitment to staying on schedule for the 2027 elections, even as lawmakers continue to debate critical amendments to Nigeria’s electoral framework.
