Impeachment Rumours Deepen Divide Among Oyo Assembly Members

Rising speculation over a possible impeachment plot against Seyi Makinde has triggered fresh tensions within the Oyo State House of Assembly, exposing divisions among lawmakers.

The development, initially dismissed as rumours, has escalated into a political crisis drawing attention from the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC).

According to reports, lawmakers recently held a crucial meeting at the governor’s residence amid concerns over a possible breakdown in relations between the executive and legislative arms of government.

Following the meeting, members of the Assembly have begun publicly declaring their positions. While some lawmakers, including the Deputy Speaker, have denied any involvement in an impeachment move, others have remained silent—fueling speculation of internal cracks within the legislature.

Chief Whip Gbenga Oyekola has strongly rejected claims of any impeachment plan, stating that he was neither aware of nor invited to such discussions. He distanced himself from any action that could destabilise the state.

Oyekola also disclosed details of the meeting with the governor, alleging that the Speaker, Adebo Ogundoyin, had been approached by influential political and traditional figures over his future ambitions, including alleged financial inducements, which were reportedly declined.

Reaffirming his stance, Oyekola pledged loyalty to Governor Makinde, stressing the need to preserve peace and stability in the state. His position mirrors that of several lawmakers who have openly aligned themselves with the governor.

Despite these assurances, uncertainty persists over the Speaker’s position, with observers questioning whether the public declarations of loyalty are sufficient to calm tensions or merely mask deeper divisions.

Analysts note that the silence of some lawmakers may signal unresolved disagreements within the Assembly, suggesting that the situation could further escalate.

The unfolding crisis has also brought renewed attention to earlier warnings by former governor Ayodele Fayose, whose comments on potential instability are now being revisited.

With more lawmakers expected to speak in the coming days, political observers remain focused on Oyo State, as the situation continues to evolve and may significantly influence the state’s political landscape.
