U.S. Congresswoman Ilhan Omar has slammed President Donald Trump and his Republican allies, accusing them of embarrassing the country with their recent remarks.
The Minnesota lawmaker came under fire after she retweeted a post that critics claimed blamed conservative activist and Trump ally, Charlie Kirk, for his own death. Kirk was assassinated on September 10, and Republican congresswoman Nancy Mace introduced a resolution to censure Omar for allegedly “smearing” him. The measure, however, failed in Congress by a narrow 214–213 vote on Wednesday.
In response, Trump lashed out on social media, accusing Omar, who is of Somali descent, of trying to dictate “how to run our country.” He added: “Somalia is consistently ranked among the world’s most corrupt countries… All of this, and Ilhan Omar tells us how to run America! What SCUM we have in our country, telling us what to do, and how to do it.”
Speaking on The Weekend Prime, Omar dismissed Trump’s attacks as “always unhinged, always derailed, always creating chaos.” She also mocked his call for her impeachment, noting that members of Congress cannot be impeached.
“He’s supposed to be the president of the United States, heading off to Europe to represent us. When he does, he should at least understand that members of Congress can’t be impeached,” she said.
Omar further argued that threats of impeachment and deportation from Trump and his allies reveal “how stupid they are,” adding that such rhetoric damages America’s reputation globally.
“When they’re saying they’re going to deport me knowing fully well that you cannot deport an American citizen, what that displays for not just Americans but folks on an international platform is that our country is being led by idiots,” Omar stated. “I feel great sadness that these are the kinds of people representing us.”
