The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has clarified that it did not request a new extension of former Kaduna State governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai’s detention, contrary to reports.
In a statement on Tuesday signed by John Okor Odey, Head of Media and Public Communication, the commission said it appeared in court on March 17, 2026, only to respond to an application filed by El-Rufai challenging the court’s March 5 remand order. The application, filed on March 6, sought to overturn the renewed detention.
During the hearing, El-Rufai’s counsel received the ICPC’s response and requested an adjournment to review it. The magistrate subsequently adjourned the case to March 31, 2026, to allow sufficient time for the defense to respond.
The ICPC outlined the detention timeline, noting that the initial 14-day remand was granted to investigate allegations of money laundering and abuse of office. Following this, the commission applied for and obtained a second 14-day extension on March 5 to complete its probe. An earlier attempt by El-Rufai’s legal team to set aside the February 19 remand order was dismissed on March 9.
“Mallam El-Rufai remains in lawful custody of the ICPC under the remand order dated March 5, 2026,” the commission stated, emphasizing that all actions comply with court directives and the Administration of Criminal Justice Act.
The ICPC also warned against misinformation circulating in the media and online, urging the public to rely on official updates.
“The ICPC conducts its duties with the highest professionalism and respect for the rule of law,” the statement concluded.
