The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has called on the Plateau State Government to account for the use of billions of naira allocated as security votes amid continued killings and attacks across the state.
The group said the Plateau Government reportedly released N18.9 billion in security votes in 2024 and another N17.28 billion between January and September 2025.
HURIWA’s National Coordinator, Emmanuel Nnadozie Onwubiko, said the continued violence raised questions about the effectiveness and accountability of the funds, while stressing that the group was not accusing the state government of diverting or misappropriating the money.
The organisation said substantial spending on security should be accompanied by evidence of the interventions and measurable outcomes achieved, particularly as attacks continue to affect communities in the state.
HURIWA urged the Plateau Government to provide citizens with a broad account of how the security funds had been deployed, while allowing sensitive operational details to remain confidential where disclosure could compromise security operations.
The group also called on the Plateau State House of Assembly and other oversight bodies to strengthen their scrutiny of security expenditure and ensure that allocated funds contribute to improved protection of lives and property.
HURIWA further urged the government to review its security strategy, strengthen intelligence-led operations, protect vulnerable communities and ensure that those responsible for attacks are arrested and prosecuted.
The call comes amid renewed security concerns in Plateau, where the state government recently imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew in Barkin Ladi, Bokkos and Mangu Local Government Areas following fresh attacks.
