Plateau State Governor, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to security, transparency, and inclusive development during a high-level interactive media engagement with stakeholders in the press, civil society, and online media. The event, held at the Twin Theatre of the New Government House, Rayfield, Jos, brought together members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Plateau Bloggers and Online Media Association, Plateau Publishers Association, and social media influencers.

The session served as a platform for the Governor to provide a comprehensive update on his administration’s efforts since assuming office on May 29, 2023, while also addressing issues raised by media stakeholders.

Tackling Insecurity and Restoring Stability

Governor Mutfwang began by addressing the persistent security concerns across Plateau, particularly in volatile areas such as Wase. He noted that upon taking office, his administration swiftly convened strategic meetings with security agencies and restructured local security operations, notably revitalizing Operation Rainbow, the state-owned security outfit. These measures, he said, have led to the reclamation of previously bandit-occupied territories and the restoration of investor confidence.

“Plateau is safer than many other North Central states today,” Mutfwang asserted. “We have no local government under the full control of bandits. Opportunistic attacks may still occur, but we are proactively averting worse outcomes.”

He further pledged continuous support to security agencies and emphasized that there are currently no permanent bandit camps in the state.

Economic Resilience Amid National Reforms

On economic recovery, the Governor acknowledged the harsh impact of fuel subsidy removal but highlighted his administration’s strategic response, particularly the rollout of the Metro Bus Scheme to ease commuting. “Rather than share palliatives, we subsidized transportation. This has helped Plateau residents save between ₦40,000 to ₦50,000 monthly,” he explained.

He also announced the successful resumption of train services and improved air connectivity, with weekly flights now running between Jos, Abuja, and Lagos. Furthermore, plans are underway to upgrade the Yakubu Gowon Airport to a cargo hub through a partnership with the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).

Healthcare, Infrastructure, and Rural Development

The Governor reported major strides in health, including the establishment of a diagnostic laboratory at Plateau Specialist Hospital and the revitalization of the Plateau State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (PLASCHEMA). The Drugs and Medical Commodities Agency has also significantly curbed counterfeit drug circulation.

In infrastructure, Governor Mutfwang disclosed that while 80% of ongoing projects are inherited, his administration is pursuing a balanced urban renewal agenda that cuts across communities of all faiths and backgrounds. “Our roads serve Christian, Muslim, and mixed communities alike. It is inclusive governance in action,” he said.

He added that farmlands and grazing reserves in Wase, once under bandit control, have now been secured and opened up for agricultural investment, further boosting food security.

Governance, Media Engagement, and Institutional Reforms

Governor Mutfwang underscored the importance of transparent governance, saying his leadership is built on hope, responsibility, and results. He reiterated that salary payments and public service reforms are obligations, not achievements.

He commended the media’s role in nation-building and expressed willingness to work with journalists in changing the narrative of Plateau State.

On the education front, institutions like Plateau State Polytechnic and Plateau State University, Bokkos, have witnessed growth in enrollment and accreditation status due to strategic government support.

NUJ Commends Governor’s Efforts, Urges More Action

In her remarks, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Plateau State Council, Mrs. Ayuku Pwaspo, lauded the Governor’s commitment to inclusiveness and empathy, especially in the face of ongoing violence.

“This gathering provides a timely platform for reflecting on Plateau’s distressing security situation. Banditry and terrorism have poisoned community relations and subverted governance in several LGAs,” she said.

Mrs. Pwaspo called on government and stakeholders to support affected families and rebuild devastated communities. “We commend your faith with the people of Plateau and your infrastructural drive despite these challenges.”

She also raised long-standing issues affecting state media institutions, noting that the Plateau Radio Television Corporation (PRTVC) last employed staff in 2011 and the Plateau Publishing Corporation (PPC) over 20 years ago.

“We appeal for urgent attention to infrastructure and staffing gaps in state media outfits. Journalists are ready to partner with government in rewriting the Plateau story,” she concluded.

Looking Ahead: Plateau is Rising

Governor Mutfwang concluded with a forward-looking message, expressing appreciation to the media and all citizens for their resilience and partnership. “We are not yet where we want to be, but we are firmly on course,” he declared. “Plateau is rising—towards a future that is peaceful, productive, and competitive.”

The interactive session underscored a renewed synergy between government and the media in driving accountability, development, and sustainable peace in Plateau State.
