Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has dissolved the board of Bayelsa United Football Club and relieved all players and technical staff of their duties following the club’s relegation from the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).

The decision was announced after Bayelsa United failed to retain their top-flight status despite receiving significant financial support from the state government throughout the season.

The governor directed that the dissolution take immediate effect, adding that a full restructuring of the club would begin ahead of the new season in the Nigeria National League (NNL).

A new management team is expected to be constituted in the coming days as the state government moves to rebuild the club and push for an immediate return to the NPFL.

Bayelsa United finished the 2026 NPFL season in the relegation zone, ending second from bottom after accumulating 43 points from 38 matches. The team recorded 11 wins, 10 draws, and 17 losses.

Since its establishment in 2008, the club has experienced multiple promotions and relegations, highlighting ongoing instability in its top-flight performances.

Officials say the overhaul is aimed at restoring discipline, improving performance, and repositioning the club for competitive success in the lower division.
