Nollywood actress and filmmaker Genevieve Nnaji is set to make a highly anticipated return to the screen in a new drama series titled Wahala, produced by BBC Studios.

The six-part thriller, adapted from a work by BAFTA-nominated writer Theresa Ikoko, will stream on BBC iPlayer and also air on BBC One.

The BBC announced the casting on Tuesday, unveiling a female-led ensemble featuring Adelayo Adedayo, Deborah Ayorinde, Cush Jumbo, and Susan Wokoma alongside Nnaji.

Based on the debut novel by Nikki May, the series follows four Nigerian-British women navigating friendship, careers, romance, and family life in contemporary London while confronting hidden secrets from their past.

The story centres on three close friends — Simi, Boo, and Ronke — played by Adedayo, Jumbo, and Wokoma respectively, whose relationship is disrupted by the arrival of a fourth woman, Isobel, portrayed by Ayorinde.

The drama explores themes of betrayal, buried truths, and the consequences of long-hidden secrets.

Nnaji expressed excitement about being part of the production, describing it as a compelling story and praising the quality of the cast and production team.

The project marks one of the actress’ most significant screen appearances in recent years. Her last major project was Lionheart, her directorial debut, which premiered internationally in 2018 before streaming on Netflix in January 2019.

Widely regarded as one of Nollywood’s most influential figures, Genevieve Nnaji has maintained a relatively low public profile in recent years, making her return a highly anticipated moment for fans.

The title Wahala, which means “trouble” in Nigerian Pidgin, is being produced by Firebird Pictures, a production company under BBC Studios.
