A Nigerian military officer, Major Bashar Mohammed, has been confirmed dead following a deadly terrorist ambush in Damasak, Borno State, which claimed the lives of at least nine soldiers and left over a dozen others missing.

The attack, carried out by IS-aligned jihadists, targeted a military patrol in the area. According to AFP, eight soldiers managed to return to base, while several remain unaccounted for, including their commander, Major Mohammed.

On Wednesday, January 28, 2026, Aliyu Jamilu, a friend of the late officer, shared the news on Facebook, revealing that Major Mohammed’s body had been recovered after several days of being missing in action.

“Innalillahi wa inna Ilaihirraju’un! Just woke to the sad news of the passing of my dear friend Major Bashar Mohammed, who paid the supreme price in defense of the motherland,” Jamilu wrote.

He added, “His body was recovered after several days of being MIA at Damasak, Borno State. May the Almighty forgive his shortcomings, expand his grave, grant him eternal rest, and comfort the family and loved ones he left behind.”

Reflecting on his friend’s character, Jamilu noted that Major Mohammed had recently reached out despite challenging conditions in the field, showing his dedication and concern for others. “To think that I spoke to him a few days ago when he told me he was in the bush with no network yet still managed to check on me says a lot about the kind of person he was. Allahu Akbar. RIP Bash, I will miss you.”
