Former Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ibrahim Idris, has died at the age of 77.
Idris reportedly died in the United Kingdom on Sunday, September 20, 2026. His death was confirmed by his nephew, Shehu Ahmed, according to reports.
The cause of death had not been officially disclosed as of the time of filing this report, although some family sources reported that the former governor had battled a prolonged illness.
Popularly known as “Ibro” or “Baba Kogi,” Idris served as governor of Kogi State for nearly nine years, from 2003 to January 2012, on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
He was first elected governor in 2003 and was re-elected in 2007. However, his second-term election was later nullified following a legal challenge over the exclusion of ANPP candidate Abubakar Audu from the election.
A re-run election was subsequently held in March 2008, which Idris won, allowing him to return to office. He remained governor until January 2012, when he was succeeded by Captain Idris Wada.
Before venturing into politics, Idris was a businessman and founded Ibro Trading Company, with interests in areas including construction, furniture manufacturing and hospitality. He also obtained a bachelor’s degree from the University of Abuja.
Following his death, Kogi State Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo declared three days of mourning and directed that the Nigerian and Kogi State flags be flown at half-mast across government institutions.
The governor also announced that Idris would receive a state burial, with the Kogi State Government taking responsibility for the burial expenses.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu also mourned the former governor, describing his death as a loss to Kogi State and Nigeria.
Further details on the burial arrangements are expected to be announced by the family and the Kogi State Government.
