Suspected bandits have killed five police officers after ambushing a convoy conveying security personnel along the Sokoto–Gusau highway in Zamfara State.
The attack occurred on Monday, November 2, 2026, when the officers were travelling in a Zamfara State mass transit bus, popularly known as Bazamfara, en route to Gusau, the state capital.
According to reports, the officers were travelling from Sokoto State to Zamfara for a special security assignment to provide protection during the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election for the Zamfara North Senatorial District in Kaura Namoda Local Government Area.
A police officer who survived the attack reportedly disclosed that the gunmen opened fire on the convoy, killing five of his colleagues.
The spokesperson for the Office of the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 10, Abdullahi Faruk, confirmed the incident, stating that the remains of the deceased officers had been deposited at the morgue of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital in Sokoto.
Reports also indicated that some officers sustained injuries, while initial accounts suggested that others might have been abducted by the attackers.
The attack adds to the growing security concerns in Zamfara and other parts of Nigeria’s North-West, where armed groups continue to target security personnel, travellers and rural communities.
