About 140 vehicles belonging to holidaymakers were damaged in a major fire at a car park serving Gatwick Airport in London.
Police and firefighters were called to the blaze at Caldyne Business Park in Rowfant, West Sussex, shortly after 9pm on Saturday.
Dramatic images from the scene showed firefighters battling the flames as thick black smoke filled the sky.
The fire also caused a temporary power outage, leaving about 2,133 homes and businesses without electricity for three minutes at 11:02pm. Nearly 60 properties remained without power until 8:05am on Sunday, according to UK Power Networks.
A 67-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of arson and has since been released on bail pending further investigations.
A spokesperson for West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service confirmed that approximately 140 vehicles were destroyed in the blaze.
The incident has left several holidaymakers worried about the safety of their cars, with some customers reportedly struggling to contact the parking company.
Sam and George Smith, aged 51 and 53, said they had paid £105 to Sapphire Parking through an app the previous week. George said they repeatedly tried to contact the company after learning about the fire.
In a statement to customers, Sapphire Parking explained that police and fire officials were preventing access to the site because of ongoing safety concerns, including the possibility of hazardous materials or objects remaining inside the compound.
The company said it expected to gain access to the site on Tuesday, subject to clearance from the relevant authorities. Once access is granted, staff said they would assess the vehicles and determine the extent of the damage.
Sapphire Parking apologised to customers for the uncertainty and inconvenience, promising to provide updates as soon as the site could be safely accessed.
The exact cause of the fire remains unclear. Fire officials said the blaze involved a workshop, electric and heavy goods vehicles, as well as cylinders, while investigations into the incident continue.
