FIFA will introduce a new tradition at the 2026 FIFA World Cup final by presenting specially designed winners’ rings to the victorious team, marking the first time such an award will accompany the iconic World Cup trophy.
The championship match between Argentina and Spain will take place on Sunday at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, with United States President Donald Trump confirmed to attend the event. Trump is expected to join FIFA President Gianni Infantino in presenting the World Cup trophy to the champions after the match.
The winners’ rings, inspired by a long-standing tradition in American sports such as the NFL’s Super Bowl, represent a significant departure from FIFA’s customary practice of awarding only gold medals to the winning team.
According to FIFA, a limited edition of 2,026 individually numbered rings has been produced to commemorate the tournament. Each of the 26 players in the title-winning squad will receive a custom-made ring, while a total of 30 exclusive rings have been reserved for the champions. An additional 1,996 replica rings will be made available for purchase by football fans worldwide.
Trump’s attendance at the final will mark his first appearance at the tournament, having missed all 102 matches played across the United States, Canada and Mexico before the showpiece fixture. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that the president will also attend a FIFA reception ahead of the final.
The relationship between Trump and FIFA President Infantino has drawn attention during the tournament following reports that the US president contacted the FIFA chief to request a review of a red card issued to United States striker Folarin Balogun earlier in the competition.
Meanwhile, FIFA is monitoring weather conditions ahead of the final after authorities issued an air quality advisory for the New York and New Jersey area due to smoke from ongoing wildfires in Canada. Despite the warning, organisers have stated that there are currently no plans to delay or postpone the final.
