The Federal Government has filed a 13-count charge before the Federal High Court in Abuja against individuals accused of plotting to overthrow the administration of Bola Tinubu.

The suspects, comprising 16 individuals, include serving and retired military personnel, as well as a police officer. Among them are a retired major general, a retired naval captain, and a serving police inspector.

They were arrested on October 31, 2025, over allegations of attempting to stage a coup. The charges reportedly include waging war against the state, as well as offences related to treason and terrorism.

Earlier in January 2026, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) confirmed the existence of a coup plot. The Director of Defence Information, Samaila Uba, said investigations conducted in line with military procedures uncovered the involvement of some personnel.

Uba had indicated at the time that those implicated would be arraigned before appropriate judicial bodies.

The case is expected to proceed at the Federal High Court as authorities pursue prosecution of the alleged plotters.
