The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has commenced an enforcement operation against vehicles with tinted windows, covered number plates, and missing registration details, citing their frequent use in criminal activities across Abuja.
Addressing journalists on Friday, the Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory, Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, said intelligence reports indicate that criminals, particularly those involved in “one-chance” robberies, often rely on such vehicles to conceal their identities, evade detection, and hinder law enforcement investigations.
According to Sanusi, the operation follows a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, ordering a comprehensive crackdown on vehicles operating in violation of existing regulations.
He explained that the enforcement exercise is not targeted at motorists who have legally obtained permits for tinted glass, but rather at individuals exploiting such modifications and registration irregularities to facilitate criminal activities.
“The objective is to deny criminal elements the anonymity they depend on to prey on innocent residents,” the commissioner stated.
Sanusi disclosed that more than 30 vehicles have already been impounded since the commencement of the operation. He added that the owners and operators of the affected vehicles would be prosecuted in accordance with the Laws of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory Road Transport Regulations 2023.
The police command urged motorists to ensure full compliance with vehicle registration requirements and obtain the necessary approvals for tinted windows to avoid sanctions during the ongoing enforcement exercise.
The command also reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening security across the Federal Capital Territory through proactive measures aimed at reducing crime and improving public safety.
