The Plateau State Police Command has arrested a farmer accused of assaulting a herder following an alleged dispute over the destruction of crops on a farm.
The incident reportedly occurred in the state amid continuing tensions between farming and herding communities over farmland and grazing activities.
According to reports, the farmer became angry after allegedly discovering that cattle belonging to the herder had entered his farmland and destroyed his crops.
The disagreement reportedly escalated, resulting in the farmer allegedly assaulting the herder.
Police subsequently arrested the farmer and commenced an investigation into the incident.
The development comes against the backdrop of recurring farmer-herder disputes in Plateau State, where disagreements over farmland, livestock and access to grazing areas have sometimes resulted in violence.
The European Union Agency for Asylum has documented cases in Nigeria where farmer-herder confrontations have involved destruction of crops and livestock, property damage and attacks by organised communal groups.
Authorities have continued to urge residents to avoid taking the law into their own hands and to report disputes to security agencies for resolution.
