The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced that Terminal 1 of Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos will be closed from March 2026 for major rehabilitation and expansion works, a project expected to last about 22 months.

During the closure, an 8,000-square-metre temporary departure hall will handle international passengers. The facility, which is near completion, will initially serve five to six international airlines. Passengers are advised to arrive earlier than usual as operations shift to the temporary terminal.

International arrivals and cargo services will continue through other sections of the airport to ensure uninterrupted operations.

The upgrade project includes a new skywalk connecting Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, improvements to the airport’s road network, and expanded apron space to accommodate wide-body aircraft.

FAAN said the rehabilitation and expansion aim to modernize infrastructure, increase capacity, and provide a smoother travel experience at one of Nigeria’s busiest airports.
