A former Borno State Commissioner for Works and Housing, Mustapha Gubio, has formally accepted the nomination form to contest the upcoming governorship election in Borno State under the platform of the All Progressives Congress.
The nomination form was presented in Maiduguri by party stakeholders, including a governorship aspirant, Dauda Illiya, and Senator Tahir Monguno, who represents Borno North Senatorial District. The presentation was also captured in a widely circulated photograph released by the governor’s spokesperson on Tuesday.
Illiya confirmed the development in a brief post on social media, describing it as “Zulum Receives Borno APC Guber Aspirant, Engr. Mustapha Gubio,” signaling Gubio’s entry into the state’s governorship race.
Gubio becomes the first known aspirant in Borno State to formally receive the APC governorship nomination form ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Until his resignation, Gubio served as Commissioner for Works and Housing, where he oversaw major infrastructure projects across the state.
His resignation follows an earlier directive by Governor Babagana Zulum, who on March 30 approved the dissolution of the State Executive Council and directed all commissioners to hand over their responsibilities to permanent secretaries.
According to a statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Bukar Tijani, the move was aimed at allowing members of the cabinet to pursue political ambitions ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The statement noted that commissioners were instructed to complete the handover of their ministries’ operations by April 3, 2026, to ensure a smooth transition and continuity of governance.
