Protesting Youths in Jos were left scrambling for safety in the evening hours of Saturday when armed security men identified as soldiers shot at the protest ground while forcing their way through Old Airport area in Jos.
You will recall that the same shooting indecent was recorded a few days ago when a convoy of cars alleged to be that of the government passed through that same road (Read). The Saturday evening incident came to the youths as a surprise when Soldiers suddenly appeared and insisted on making their way through the protest ground and started shooting to disperse youths who now scrambled for safety. Though no youth was reported hit by the shooting a couple were wounded while scrambling for safety while an asthmatic lady also had an emergency attack after running in the evening hours of the protest.
Though peaceful, the youths under various aggies stormed the major roundabout in the state capital, Old Airport Junction also called NASCO junction as early as 8:30am with various forms of placards denouncing the Nigerian Police over the spate of extra judiciary killings of innocent Nigerians by the security operatives. The protest was on its 8th day in Jos, joining other youths across the country in calling for the end of police brutality also tagged as the “End Sars” campaign in Nigeria.
Some of the placards read: “We don’t want SWAT, there’s no difference between it and SARS” We want complete and total overhauling of all security apparatus in the country” President Buhari sacks the Service Chiefs now” among other inscriptions. However, men of Nigerian Police were seen watching afar off from the scene of the protest while others were directing vehicles to follow alternative routes.
The protest later rounded off with a candlelight procession as youths remembered those who have been unjustly murdered.
