Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has sparked fresh reactions online after saying that “Instagram is for girls” in a post on X.
Musk made the remark on October 1, 2026, while responding to a post by Geiger Capital, which announced that it had deleted its Instagram account and described the Meta-owned platform as an “inherently female app.” Musk replied simply: “Instagram is for girls.”
The comment quickly generated reactions on X, with some users agreeing with Musk’s view, while others criticised the statement and questioned the idea of associating social media platforms with a particular gender.
Musk has made a similar comment before. In May 2026, he wrote that “Instagram is for girls” while responding to a discussion about social media habits. He later made another remark questioning why adult men would send him links to their Instagram profiles, comments that also attracted criticism online.
The latest comments have also renewed attention on the rivalry between Musk’s X and Meta, which owns Instagram. However, Instagram continues to have a large and diverse user base, making Musk’s statement a personal opinion rather than a description of the platform’s official audience or purpose.
