Governor of Borno State, Babagana Umara Zulum, has called on residents to remain vigilant during Eid prayers in Maiduguri following intelligence reports of a potential terrorist attack.
Zulum disclosed the warning during an interview with the BBC Hausa Service, stating that security agencies had uncovered information suggesting suspected suicide bombers may be planning to strike.
“We have intelligence that there are two suicide bombers lurking around to carry out attacks, and we are calling on all our people to remain vigilant,” the governor said.
The alert comes days after coordinated explosions hit parts of Maiduguri, including areas around the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, a city roundabout, and the Post Office, leaving over 23 people dead and more than 100 others injured.
Zulum noted that insurgents, currently under sustained military pressure, may attempt fresh attacks as a diversion, but expressed confidence that such efforts would be thwarted.
The governor, who recently returned from lesser Hajj in Saudi Arabia, also visited victims of the attacks and commended the Federal Government for its swift response.
He acknowledged the release of funds for clearance operations around the fringes of Lake Chad and the directive for Service Chiefs to relocate to Maiduguri to strengthen security operations.
Through his spokesperson, Dauda Iliya, Zulum had earlier advised residents to exercise caution, particularly in places of worship, during the Eid period.
He assured citizens that security agencies have been fully mobilised to prevent further attacks, urging the public to remain calm but alert and to report any suspicious activities promptly.
Zulum reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting victims and restoring lasting peace across Borno State and the North-East region.
