The Department of State Services (DSS) has alerted Muslim and Christian leaders in Osun State to an alleged plan by terrorists to attack places of worship and other public gathering centres.
The warning was reportedly issued during separate meetings with representatives of the Muslim community and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Osogbo on Wednesday, September 9, 2026.
According to reports from the briefings, the intelligence indicated that terrorists were planning to extend insecurity to parts of the South-West, with Osun identified as a potential target. The alleged plot was said to be aimed at creating fear and disrupting preparations for the 2027 general elections.
The reported targets include churches, mosques, markets, schools, clubs, viewing centres and other locations where large numbers of people gather.
Religious leaders were advised to strengthen security around their premises and remain vigilant about unfamiliar persons and vehicles.
Christian leaders were reportedly cautioned against allowing suspicious vehicles to park close to church premises and were encouraged to review security arrangements for night programmes. Muslim leaders were also advised to strengthen security at mosques, including the use of night guards and increased monitoring of activities around their premises.
The President of the Osun State Muslim Community, Alhaji Mustapha Olawuyi, confirmed that the DSS meeting took place and urged residents to remain vigilant.
The Osun State Chairman of CAN, Pastor John Adeleke, also confirmed the briefing, saying Christian leaders were asked to pass the security information to churches and other institutions under their watch.
Reacting to the alert, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke urged residents to report suspicious movements and activities to security agencies.
Adeleke particularly called on residents in border communities to be vigilant and cautioned communities against accommodating unfamiliar persons without proper checks.
The governor also directed security agencies in the state to review their security plans and strengthen measures to protect lives and property. He said he would convene a State Security Council meeting to assess the situation and determine an appropriate response.
Authorities have urged residents not to panic but to remain security-conscious and provide timely information to the relevant agencies.
