The Ijaw National Congress (INC) has called for caution in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent threat to deploy American special forces to northern Nigeria to protect Christians from potential terrorist attacks.

INC President, Prof. Benjamin Okaba, in a statement on Wednesday, stressed that while the safety of citizens remains paramount, Nigeria’s sovereignty must be respected by all nations, regardless of their global standing.

He noted that Nigeria deserves recognition and respect within the international community, emphasizing that any foreign military intervention could undermine the country’s independence and internal authority.

“As the President of the Ijaw National Congress (INC), I align with the general sentiment of Nigerians who reject foreign intervention and uphold national sovereignty,” Okaba stated.

The INC leader, however, urged the Nigerian government to seize this moment of international attention as an opportunity to strengthen internal security systems and demonstrate its capacity to protect the lives and property of its citizens, irrespective of religious or political differences.

Okaba also called for constructive dialogue between the Nigerian government and the United States to prevent a diplomatic rift and ensure that cooperation against terrorism proceeds within the bounds of mutual respect.

“Given the context, I emphasize the importance of dialogue and cooperation while ensuring the protection of Nigeria’s interests and territorial integrity. The Nigerian government has already expressed willingness to work with the U.S. in fighting terrorism, as long as it respects the country’s sovereignty,” he said.

To avoid any kinetic confrontation, Okaba advised that Nigeria should prioritize strengthening its internal security architecture while engaging diplomatically to address international concerns over religious freedom and violence.

President Trump, on Sunday, had warned that he would not hesitate to send American troops to Nigeria to “wipe away Islamist terrorists” and ensure Christians in the country can freely practice their religion without fear or persecution.
