Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (retd.), has said every Nigerian should have the opportunity to undergo military training to better understand the discipline, endurance and sacrifices involved in protecting the country.
Musa made the remarks during an interview on the African Leadership Podcast hosted by Ken Giami.
The minister said military training would expose citizens to some of the challenges faced by soldiers, including hunger, exhaustion, physical strain and prolonged periods without sleep.
“If I have my way, every Nigerian should be able to go through military training. I can tell you for free; it will give you a different perspective about life,” Musa said.
According to him, such training would also teach Nigerians the importance of endurance and teamwork, noting that military operations require personnel to work together rather than operate individually.
Musa said greater exposure to military training could help citizens appreciate the sacrifices made by members of the armed forces, who often spend long periods away from their families while serving in difficult conditions.
He also appealed to Nigerians to show greater understanding towards military personnel, saying soldiers leave their families behind and operate in challenging environments to protect the country.
The Defence Minister further said Nigeria’s security challenges could not be addressed through military action alone.
He explained that both military and non-military approaches were necessary, with measures such as better roads, healthcare, schools, food security and other social interventions also important in addressing insecurity.
Musa also urged Nigerians to develop stronger patriotism, arguing that citizens must believe in and support the country if they want to see it become more secure and prosperous.
