A coalition of civil society organisations, labour activists, youth groups, and concerned Nigerians has announced plans for a nationwide protest on June 12, Nigeria’s Democracy Day, to demand urgent action on insecurity, hunger, and worsening economic hardship.
The coalition includes prominent human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, alongside activist and musician Falz, the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR), Joint Action Front (JAF), Youth Rights Campaign (YRC), and other advocacy groups.
In a joint statement, the groups said there is “little to celebrate” on Democracy Day, arguing that many Nigerians continue to face rising insecurity, inflation, poverty, and declining living standards.
They accused the Federal Government of failing to adequately address the country’s security crisis, citing ongoing attacks by terrorists, bandits, kidnappers, and other criminal groups across multiple states.
The coalition also expressed solidarity with victims of abductions in several parts of the country, calling for urgent action to secure the release of those still in captivity.
According to the statement, the planned protest is part of a broader movement aimed at pressing the government to adopt stronger measures to protect lives, improve economic conditions, and reverse what they described as anti-poor policies.
Organisers said further details of mobilisation and protest locations will be communicated in the coming days as preparations intensify nationwide.
