The event, hosted by Happily Together, marked the finale of its “Breaking the Norms” Series and featured the premiere screening of documentary stories showcasing couples who challenge traditional stereotypes and promote equality in relationships.

Held on March 8, 2026, at Gidan Bege in Jos, the programme brought together couples, development advocates, and members of the public for film screenings, discussions on gender norms in relationships, and networking opportunities.

The project, implemented by Happily Together in partnership with Africa No Filter and CcHub, documented the stories of nine couples whose marriages demonstrate supportive and balanced partnerships that defy outdated cultural expectations.

The stories highlight women excelling in leadership, entrepreneurship, and academia, often with the support of their spouses, while also portraying men as caregivers, nurturers, and partners actively involved in family life.

Speaking at the event, Team Lead of Happily Together, Nasiri Sayidu, explained that the storytelling platform was created to counter the growing number of negative narratives surrounding marriage.

According to him, the platform focuses on sharing positive African stories about family and relationships in order to inspire younger generations.

“We observed that many of the stories people hear about marriage today are negative, and that discourages young people from wanting to get married,” Sayidu said. “Our aim is to highlight real-life examples of couples who support one another and are building strong homes.”

He noted that the “Breaking the Norms” series specifically focused on women who are contributing significantly to society beyond traditional expectations.

“The stories show women who are entrepreneurs and professionals thriving in different sectors, and we also see husbands who support them to achieve their potential. At the same time, these men are actively involved in family responsibilities,” he explained.

Sayidu emphasized that strong communication and mutual understanding remain essential for successful marriages.

“Whether you are dating or married, communication is key. Couples need to understand their shared interests and goals for the family,” he said. “Children belong to both parents, and supporting each other’s dreams benefits the entire household.”

Also speaking at the event, Sally Wazhi highlighted the importance of mutual giving in relationships, describing it as a principle that sustains both families and society.

“Life is designed in such a way that we must give in order to receive. In relationships, both partners must contribute their part,” she said, noting that fear often prevents people from giving fully in relationships.

Development journalist Marie-Therese Nanlong said the theme “Give to Gain” resonates strongly with women’s empowerment and societal development.

“When you empower a woman through education, skills, or support, the entire society benefits,” she said. “A woman who is empowered will raise children who contribute positively to society.”

Musician and missionary Solomon Peter Gambo also stressed the importance of supporting women to maximize their potential.

“There is so much a woman can achieve if given the opportunity. As husbands, we must create that platform for our wives to thrive,” he said.

Similarly, Grace Zach Barki emphasized that agreement and adherence to shared values are crucial for building strong families, adding that mutual respect, love, and commitment are key to sustaining marriages.

Development journalist and digital storyteller Palang Kasmi noted that supporting women’s development through resources, advocacy, and education ultimately leads to societal progress.

“When we invest in women, whether through education, economic empowerment, or advocacy against gender-based violence, the impact is felt across the entire community,” she said.

The event concluded with a panel session featuring couples who shared their personal experiences, demonstrating how partnership, mutual respect, and shared responsibilities can strengthen marriages and challenge traditional gender stereotypes.

The “Breaking the Norms” series continues to inspire healthier relationships and promote a culture of equality and support within African families.
