Award-winning Nigerian author and renowned feminist, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, has expressed deep concern over the worsening economic situation in Nigeria, stating that the country’s once-thriving middle class is now grappling with poverty and desperation.

Speaking in a recent interview, Adichie said the cost of living has skyrocketed to a point where even people who were formerly considered securely middle-class now struggle to survive and, in many cases, resort to begging.

“I can see it in how people who were formerly securely middle class—and not that life was rosy for them, but they got by—are now people who beg and who are in need. That worries me greatly,” she said.

The acclaimed author of Half of a Yellow Sun noted that the soaring prices of food and basic necessities have left many Nigerians in dire straits, warning that prolonged hardship could lead to societal instability.

“When life gets very hard, even people who before would not have considered certain things suddenly are willing to. And that’s dangerous for society,” Adichie added.

She further stated that true political leadership should be measured not by economic indexes but by the quality of life experienced by everyday citizens.

“When people say the stock market, I don’t really care about that sort of thing. What I care about is that person who has an almost minimum wage job—how is that person getting on in this economy?” she queried.

Her comments come amid growing complaints about inflation, food insecurity, and unemployment under the current administration.
