Businesses remained closed and streets were largely deserted in parts of Johannesburg, South Africa, on Tuesday as anti-immigrant demonstrators staged protests following calls by some groups for undocumented foreign nationals to leave the country.
The demonstration came after anti-immigrant groups reportedly set June 30, 2026, as a deadline for undocumented Black immigrants to leave South Africa.
On the day of the protest, many shops in the city’s central business district did not open for business, while some workers stayed home and transport activities were significantly reduced.
A Nigerian woman living in the area shared a video on social media showing deserted commercial streets in her neighbourhood. The footage captured rows of closed shops, including businesses reportedly owned by South Africans, while taxi services appeared suspended and only a few people were seen on the roads.
The video has since circulated online, drawing reactions from social media users amid concerns over the impact of the demonstration on businesses and residents.
As of the time of filing this report, there were no immediate official reports confirming widespread violence in the areas shown in the video.
