In a passionate call to action, Michael Oglegba, has written a detailed ambitious vision for the comprehensive rebuilding of Benue state. Recognizing the age-old adage that it is easier to destroy than to build, and even simpler to build than to repair, the people of Benue are actively engaged in a multifaceted transformation effort. Early signs of progress are already evident.
One of the most remarkable achievements has been the fulfillment of a promise made to the people: salaries and pensions are now paid without fail on the 25th of every month, with 100% gratuity payments upon retirement, signifying a dramatic improvement in financial stability.
Within the capital city of Makurdi, work is in full swing on 16 new roads, and a “Light up Makurdi” project is set to illuminate every street with renewable solar streetlights. Plans are also underway to re-surface major roads in Makurdi and other key towns. Major repair work is currently underway on the State Assembly complex, with plans for similar restoration work at the state secretariat. Notably, both major landmarks have been connected to the 33kVA power line, marking a historic milestone in electricity provision.
Significant reorganization is ongoing at the teaching hospital, with the aim of establishing it as the reference hospital in the middle belt of Nigeria. This transformation is addressing long-standing issues related to power, water, and facility management.
In a commitment to empower the youth, ten thousand individuals are currently undergoing IT-related training, powered by Google. This underscores the government’s strong focus on human capital development. Moreover, training programs for civil servants are set to commence shortly. Benue has taken the lead by implementing a 65-year retirement age for teachers and recently initiating hazard allowances in medical facilities, alongside special allowances for NYSC doctors and others.
The state has recently procured 100 buses for Benue Links, with the goal of improving public transportation services and reducing the burden on the populace. Concurrently, several state-owned companies are undergoing revitalization efforts to boost the local economy.
Perhaps the most impressive aspect of these initiatives is that they have been funded without resorting to borrowing. The government’s renewed emphasis on Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) and a reduction in the cost of governance have made these transformative changes possible. The government’s commitment to transparency, evident through the procurement act and fiscal responsibility framework, has played a pivotal role in combating corruption and releasing resources previously lost to fraudulent schemes.
With a focus on attracting new investments and revitalizing dormant companies, Benue is well-positioned to stimulate economic growth. This drive is further supported by regular salary payments and ongoing infrastructure projects.
As the people of Benue gather for worship, they are encouraged to pray for the state and its leadership, seeking divine blessings and committing to being part of the solution. Welcome to a new era for Benue, as the community joins together in rebuilding its future. Happy Sunday.
