The Bayelsa State Government has imposed an immediate 24-hour curfew on Biseni community in Yenagoa Local Government Area following a violent protest over the lack of basic infrastructure.
Several buildings belonging to traditional chiefs were reportedly set ablaze during the unrest, which erupted as youths protested the absence of electricity, good roads and other essential amenities in the oil-producing community.
Governor Douye Diri announced the curfew on Friday, October 9, 2026, following security briefings on the deteriorating situation. The announcement was contained in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah.
According to the statement, some individuals had barricaded roads leading into and within the community and set bonfires, disrupting movement and raising security concerns. The governor subsequently directed security operatives to restore peace and normalcy and protect lives and property.
The protest reportedly stemmed from demands for improved infrastructure and development interventions from the oil-producing company operating in the area. Tensions further escalated following the reported arrest of a youth accused of sponsoring protesters to block the company’s access road.
The state government has urged residents to remain calm and law-abiding as security agencies work to restore order in the community.
