A notorious bandit leader, Kachallah Muhammad, has reportedly opened communication with the family of a retired Nigerian military officer who was recently abducted in Katsina State, demanding the release of some of his detained associates as a condition for negotiations.

According to multiple reports, the retired officer, identified as Major General Rabe Abubakar (rtd), was abducted alongside his wife on Saturday after their vehicle was ambushed along the Marabar Musawa–Kafinsoli road in Matazu Local Government Area.

The assailants reportedly emerged from nearby bush paths, blocked the road, and forced the couple into a forested area.

Sources say the bandit leader initiated contact with the family on Monday, June 1, 2026, marking a rare direct line of communication between the abductors and relatives of high-profile victims.

During the interaction, the suspect allegedly used the opportunity to make demands, insisting on the release of individuals believed to be his associates currently in custody of security agencies.

A local government source who reportedly participated in the communication said the abducted general was also able to speak briefly during the exchange, assuring relatives that he and his wife were safe and being treated well.

Residents of the area described the development as both alarming and revealing of the growing pattern of negotiations often seen in high-profile abduction cases in parts of northwestern Nigeria, where armed groups frequently use captives as leverage for prisoner swaps or ransom discussions.

Security authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the reported contact or the ongoing negotiations.
